Assessing Economic Damages in Personal Injury and Wrongful Death Litigation: The State of North Carolina
This article is one in a series of articles in the Journal of Forensic Economics detailing the different and the common methods for assessing economic damages in the various states. In this article we discuss the legal framework by which economic damages are computed in personal injury and wrongful death cases in the state courts of North Carolina. The relevant state statutes, case precedents, and North Carolina Pattern Instructions (jury) are presented for the various aspects of a forensic economist’s work in estimating economic damages.

Towards realistic implementations of a Majorana surface code
Surface codes have emerged as promising candidates for quantum information
processing. Building on the previous idea to realize the physical qubits of
such systems in terms of Majorana bound states supported by topological
semiconductor nanowires, we show that the basic code operations, namely
projective stabilizer measurements and qubit manipulations, can be implemented
by conventional tunnel conductance probes and charge pumping via
single-electron transistors, respectively. The simplicity of the access scheme

Multivariate Design of Experiments for Engineering Dimensional Analysis
We consider the design of dimensional analysis experiments when there is more
than a single response. We first give a brief overview of dimensional analysis
experiments and the dimensional analysis (DA) procedure. The validity of the DA
method for univariate responses was established by the Buckingham -Theorem
in the early 20th century. We extend the theorem to the multivariate case,
develop basic criteria for multivariate design of DA and give guidelines for
design construction. Finally, we illustrate the construction of designs for DA
experiments for an example involving the design of a heat exchanger
A Causal Source which Mimics Inflation
How unique are the inflationary predictions for the cosmic microwave
anisotropy pattern? In this paper, it is asked whether an arbitrary causal
source for perturbations in the standard hot big bang could effectively mimic
the predictions of the simplest inflationary models. A surprisingly simple
example of a `scaling' causal source is found to closely reproduce the
inflationary predictions. This letter extends the work of a previous paper
(ref. 6) to a full computation of the anisotropy pattern, including the Sachs
Wolfe integral. I speculate on the possible physics behind such a source.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, 3 figure
A Closed-Form Expression for the Gravitational Radiation Rate from Cosmic Strings
We present a new formula for the rate at which cosmic strings lose energy
into gravitational radiation, valid for all piecewise-linear cosmic string
loops. At any time, such a loop is composed of straight segments, each of
which has constant velocity. Any cosmic string loop can be arbitrarily-well
approximated by a piecewise-linear loop with sufficiently large. The
formula is a sum of polynomial and log terms, and is exact when the
effects of gravitational back-reaction are neglected. For a given loop, the
large number of terms makes evaluation ``by hand" impractical, but a computer
or symbolic manipulator yields accurate results. The formula is more accurate
and convenient than previous methods for finding the gravitational radiation
rate, which require numerical evaluation of a four-dimensional integral for
each term in an infinite sum. It also avoids the need to estimate the
contribution from the tail of the infinite sum. The formula has been tested
against all previously published radiation rates for different loop
configurations. In the cases where discrepancies were found, they were due to
errors in the published work. We have isolated and corrected both the analytic
and numerical errors in these cases. To assist future work in this area, a

Symmetry-surfing the moduli space of Kummer K3s.
A maximal subgroup of the Mathieu group M24 arises as the combined
holomorphic symplectic automorphism group of all Kummer surfaces whose Kaehler
class is induced from the underlying complex torus. As a subgroup of M24, this
group is the stabilizer group of an octad in the Golay code. To meaningfully
combine the symmetry groups of distinct Kummer surfaces, we introduce the
concepts of Niemeier markings and overarching maps between pairs of Kummer
surfaces. The latter induce a prescription for symmetry-surfing the moduli
space, while the former can be seen as a first step towards constructing a
vertex algebra that governs the elliptic genus of K3 in an M24-compatible
fashion. We thus argue that a geometric approach from K3 to Mathieu Moonshine
